Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns
Talking Stick Resort Arena, Phoenix, Arizona
The Dallas Mavericks have won five of their last six games. On Friday, they hope to keep their momentum going when they travel to Phoenix where they haven’t won their last four games.
The Suns are on the opposite end of the momentum spectrum. Phoenix has lost three of their last four games including 140-132 loss to the Washington Wizards.
Friday’s game takes place at the Talking Stick Resort Arena with tip-off scheduled for 9 p.m. EST.
Dallas needs to establish a presence in the paintIn the Mavericks’ most recent loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas was dominated on the boards. The Clippers snagged 17 offensive rebounds. That’s 17 added possessions on the offensive end.
They need to revert back to tendency, where they use a strong performance inside to fuel their outstanding offense. Dallas averages almost 118 points per game, which is fourth best in the NBA. On Friday, they face one of the better defenses in the league in Phoenix, who holds opponents 112 points per game.
Meanwhile, on the defensive end, the Suns have one of the best offenses in the NBA. Leading them is Devin Booker, who averages 24.9 points per game. And with the addition of Ricky Rubio, the Suns have a true point guard who controls the offense.
Because of this, Dallas must do an excellent job on the defensive end, especially in switches. The Suns are one of the most unselfish teams, averaging 27.5 assists per game.
The Suns need better perimeter defensePhoenix didn’t have one of its best performances in their recent loss to the Wizards. Washington made 19 three-pointers on their way to win.
Given the Suns face one of the best offenses in the NBA on Friday, they’ll need to tighten up. The Mavericks don’t have the best three-point shooting, but as a team they knock down 47% of their field goal attempts. So, if the Suns don’t do a good job contesting shots, Dallas has the skill to pull ahead and not look back.
Offensively, Booker is the catalyst. He’s scored 25 points in at least eight games this season, so if he can have a huge game against an average Dallas defense, then the Suns could get back into the win column.
The Mavericks snap their four-game losing streak in Phoenix. They’re playing consistently better and they have excellent shooters who’ll test a Suns’ defense that’s shown the tendency to be overwhelmed against better teams. Dallas makes enough shots down the stretch to win a close game.
Dallas is 8-1 in the over in their last nine games against Western Conference opponents. Expect this trend to continue as this contest features two high-scoring offenses that’ll have ample opportunities to score. Dallas edges out Phoenix in what amounts to a shootout.
