Sports Designate Jharel Cotton For Assignment

The Athletics declared Wednesday that they’ve assigned right-hander Jharel Cotton for task and chose the agreement of right-hander Daulton Jefferies from Double-A Midland. Oakland’s 40- man program stays full.

Cotton, 27, joined the A’s close by righties Frankie Montas and Grant Holmes in the 2016 exchange that sent Josh Reddick and Rich Hill to the Dodgers. At the time, he was viewed as a genuinely well-respected pitching prospect and a potential long haul turn piece, however things haven’t worked out that way. While Cotton intrigued with a 2.15 ERA in 29 1/3 innings with the An’s in 2016 following that exchange, he was not able imitate that over a bigger example in 2017.

That 2017 season saw Cotton limp to a 5.58 ERA in 129 innings, due to a great extent to a disturbing 2.0 HR/9 imprint. He missed the whole 2018 season due to Tommy John medical procedure, and his 2019 rebound season was abbreviated by a hamstring issue that in the end required careful fix. Now, it’s been over a long time since Cotton has tossed an inning in a Major League game.

Jefferies, 24, was a Competitive Balance choice (No. 37 generally) by the A’s back in 2016. He split the 2019 season between Class-An Advanced and Double-A, where he attempted to a joined 3.42 ERA with a supernatural 93- to-9 K/BB proportion in 79 innings (10.6 K/9, 1.0 BB/9). Jefferies scarcely pitched from 2016- 18 because of shoulder damage during his lesser year at Cal Berkeley and Tommy John medical procedure in 2017. In any case, the 2019 battle was a reverberating rebound year that has moved him solidly into the positions of the Athletics’ most encouraging youthful arms.
