Brewers Acquire Mark Mathias From Indians
The Brewers and Indians declared a minor exchange Wednesday, with Cleveland sending small time infielder Mark Mathias to Milwaukee in return for small time catcher Andres Melendez. Milwaukee has chosen the agreement of Mathias.
Mathias, 25, should have been added to the 40- man program so as to be shielded from the Rule 5 Draft. The Indians evidently favored not to submit that 40- man spot to Mathias, provoking the present swap with the Brewers, who’ll now get some new infield profundity. The 2015 third-rounder hit .269/.355/.442 with twelve grand slams, 31 pairs, two triples and 13 taken bases at Triple-A this past season. Mathias is essentially a second baseman and third baseman, but on the other hand he’s logged 203 innings at shortstop since being drafted.
Milwaukee marked the now-18- year-old Melendez out of Venezuela back in 2017. He played 36 games with the Brewers’ Rookie-level Arizona subsidiary in 2019, hitting .250/.340/.352 with a 30 percent got taking rate behind the plate. In spite of being a very long time from the Majors, Melendez was positioned 16th among Brewers farmhands by Kiley McDaniel and Eric Longenhagen on their midsesason update of the group’s possibility rankings.
